Measuring Vehicle Exhaust Noise

The measurement process consists of checking the meter's calibration, setting the meter up in the correct position and then making a number of measurements with the vehicle's engine running at the correct speed.


1) Check the Meter's Calibration

The calibrator (included in the CK261S Kit) is used to check the calibration of the sound level meter before making measurements. This is usually a requirement of the regulations and should be done before starting noise measurements.

  • Fit the calibrator onto the microphone
  • Switch the calibrator on
  • Press the Cal button

2) Position the Sound Level Meter

In accordance with the ISO 5130 standard, the microphone should be positioned 0.5m from the exhaust outlet at an angle of 45°.

3) Measure the Noise

Bring the vehicle's engine up to speed. Usually 3/4 of the speed at which the engine produces its maximum power.   remote control Use the remote control to start and stop the noise measurements, which should usually be repeated three times, with the arithmetic average giving the result. sound level meter display
