Sound Level Meter

Noise Measurement Applications

The Pulsar Nova sound level meter meets the ANSI S1.4 standard to Type 1 or Type 2, and the IEC 61672 standard to Class 1 or Class 2. Before selecting a sound level meter please check any regulations you are following to ensure you have the correct grade of meter with the correct functions.

For advice on the most suitable and most cost effective sound level meter from our range please just call or email on

tick Basic Noise Survey

The most common requirement of a basic survey is to measure the "A" weighted sound level with a Fast or Slow time weighting. Both Nova models 41 and 42 do this at the same time as measuring other weightings just in case they are also needed.

The meter also measures the Maximum (Lmax) and Minimum (Lmin) sound levels, displaying the results clearly on the color OLED display.

If your regulations require a non-integrating sound level meter meeting ANSI S1.4, IEC 61672 or IEC 60651 then the Nova model 41 or 42 should be ideal.

tick OSHA Occupational Noise - USA Regulations

The USA occupational noise regulations (OSHA) demand the measurement of Slow sound level on a meter that meets ANSI S1.4 to Type 2. The Nova Model 42 meets these requirements. You could also use the higher grade Model 41, but Type 1 is not required for this type of application.

For a more detailed occupational noise assessment or where noise levels are unstable, we recommend the Nova Model 44, which is an integrating sound level meter. This is beneficial as it averages the sound levels for you.

For occupational noise assessments you should also have a Sound Level Calibrator.

cross Noise at Work - UK and EU Regulations

The EU regulations and UK HSE Guidelines state that you should use an integrating sound level meter to assess a worker's noise exposure levels. For this type of noise measurement you should consider the Nova Model 44 Integrating Sound Level Meter.

tick Alarm Testing

For many alarm testing standards standards, such as BS EN 5839, you should use a sound level meter that meets IEC 61672 to Class 2 or ANSI S1.4 Type 2. You can use a Class 1 / Type 1 meter too as this is more accurate, but will cost more. The meter should be capable of measuring the Slow sound level.

The Nova Model 42 Type 2 Sound Level Meter should be ideal for this type of measurement. We also recommend the use of a Calibrator to check the meter's performance. Software can be helpful for recording results, but is not essential.

tick Vehicle Noise Testing

The standard ISO 5130 Acoustics - Measurements of sound pressure level emitted by stationary road vehicles states that a Class 1 Sound Level Meter to IEC 61672 should be used for noise measurements. The meter's function should be checked before and after measurement sessions using a suitable Class 1 Calibrator.

We recommend using the Nova Model 41 Type 1 / Class 1 Sound Level Meter along with the P105 Class 1 Sound Level Calibrator.
