Noise Monitoring Terminals

Overview Noise Pole Extreme Conditions Portable Current Loop

"Noise Pole" - Environmental Noise Monitoring Terminal

The Noise Pole is an environmental noise monitoring terminal that has been designed for long term monitoring. It is particularly suited for installation in residential areas where appearance and resistance to vandalism are essential.

The Noise Pole meets the required acoustic and environmental specifications:

  • Class 1 to IEC 61672, Type 1 to IEC 60651 and IEC 60804
  • Measurement range 20 to 140 dB(A) - single span
  • Mounted to the top of a tilting mast
  • Automatic noise event detection (e.g. aircraft)
  • Multiple noise environment groups
  • Integrated weather sensor option
  • Connection via direct link, modem or GSM.

Noise Monitoring Functions

The noise monitor has a number of different noise measurement stores, all running in parallel. The main measurement stores are:

Noise Events - These are acoustic events such as an aircraft flyby or train passing. The noise monitor can be configured to detect such events based on the sound levels, duration, rate of rise and fall, etc. Detected events are stored by date and time along with acoustic parameters such as LAeq, LAmax, duration. The Leq is also stored every second to provide a graph of the noise event.

Noise Environments - These typically describe the surrounding background noise around the site. All noise is included in these measurements, but the Noise Events can be removed, giving an impression of the environment without these occurrences. Multiple Noise Environments run in parallel with user selectable time periods. Parameters such as LAeq, Ln (L10, L90, etc.) are stored.

Time History - The "short Leq" is stored every second, giving a detailed graph of the sound level over time and allowing for more detailed analysis and reporting.

Protection Against the Elements

The Noise Pole is intended for the long term monitoring of noise around large areas. In this case "Long term" can mean anything from a few months to many years. The power supply, communications equipment and backup batteries are installed inside the mast, with the acoustic processor in the small box at the top of the mast. All parts, including the microphone, are well protected against rain, snow and sun damage, giving a maintenance schedule of typically six months or one year.

Although the Noise Pole can be used for shorter periods, the installation requirements (base, mast, power, communications) usually suggest the use of a portable noise monitor in these circumstances.

Protection Against Vandalism

The Noise Pole is intended use in residential areas and so is designed to not attract too much attention. This is the Pole's best defense against vandalism. It is mounted on a standard tilting mast as used in most areas for lighting.

All electronic and sensitive parts are mounted either inside the mast or right at the top. The mast is extremely strong and protective.
