Noise Measurement Options

Hand-Held Sound Level Meter

A Class 1 Sound Level Meter (CR811C) can be used to make spot checks of the noise situation around a building site. These meters make all the usual measurements and are easy to use.

However, if you need to make longer term measurements, maybe over a few weeks or even months, a hand-held meter will not be ideal.

Portable and Semi-Permanent Noise Monitoring

When monitoring needs to be carried out over longer periods and in all weather conditions, we can provide you with anything from a highly portable weatherproof sound level meter system to a semi-permanent installation that can be left unattended for months on end.

Portable Noise Monitor

Portable

For short-term construction projects (up to a few months), where it may be necessary to monitor in different locations, we can supply portable noise monitoring systems like the one shown on the left. These consist of an environmental noise processor housed in a weatherproof case, connected to an outdoor microphone using a special 10m low-noise microphone cable.

Portable noise monitors are usually left measuring for about 1 week, during which time they run on the internal battery and store all the measurements automatically. After a week the unit can be returned to the office or a portable computer can be taken to the site, and all the data is downloaded. If monitoring is ongoing then the battery can be exchanged for a fully charged one.

These units can be fitted with modems and be connected to external power if necessary.

Semi-Permanent

Semi-Permanent

For longer term construction and building work, a system with a more permanent installation will give better security and protection against the elements. These systems consists of a heavy duty weatherproof box containing the noise processing unit. The outdoor microphone can be installed on a wall (as shown) or on a free-standing mast.

These units usually connect back to your computer using standard cabling or a modem. Other methods such as GSM are also available. External power (110V to 240V) is usually the best option for these longer-term noise monitoring units.
